This situation is a huge family issue- everyone is expressing their opinions. You have concerns as well so you meet with other friends/family and collaborate to give the best defense for your opinion as possible.

Your task is to decide what side of this issue you support, either Team Mother or Team Father. You will meet with your peers that share these thoughts and will work to create dialogue for a debate. In order to address the complexity of this issue, many views must be included; there must be members of your group that will represent the opinions of a doctor, the Mother or Father (whichever you support), a cultural representative (not necessarily religious) and any other view points that you deem relavent.

The debate will be mediated by the teacher. It must be understood that this is a debate, not an argument, and so all comments and reactions must be made with respect; any signs of disrespect of any peers, teachers or opinions will result in a failing grade and disciplinary action.

The Task

Below is a link with some guidelines and tips for structuring a debate:

Here are some questions that you could use to design your opinion:

1. Would the parents be having the second child for the right reasons or would this child only be used as a 'spare part baby'?

2. Is it fair to let the sick child continue fighting their disease while there is a very real and promising cure?

3. How would the children feel about themselves and each other if they ever found out that one of them was born to save the other's life?

4. How would the sick child feel if they found out that they could have been cured with a savior sibling but the parents chose not to?
